Finfind chatted to Alan Knott-Craig about his latest, ‘hot off the press’ book, “13 Rules for Being an Entrepreneur”.
The number 13 is commonly regarded to be an unlucky number by the superstitious. Why did you decide on 13 rules for entrepreneurs rather than 10?
You are right, 13 is commonly considered unlucky. I’ve done some research into the history of this myth and realised that maybe it’s not so unlucky. I like the number because it’s misunderstood, and because it’s a prime number. You’ll notice in the book that the numbers 7 and 13 dominate.
One of the qualities you recommend for an entrepreneur is to be is “antifragile”, could you tell us what you mean by that?
Set your life up in such a way that when things don’t go your way, you profit. For example: If you have debt and interest rates go up, you’re in trouble. You’re fragile. If you have no debt and no cash and interest rates go up, it doesn’t impact you. You’re resilient. If you have cash and interest rates go up, you can profit from buying up cheap assets that are on fire-sale from the folks with too much debt. That’s anti-fragile.
If you had to choose just one, your top tip or rule for an entrepreneur to abide by, which one would it be?
Tell the truth. That way you never have to remember what you said.
Are you busy writing, or planning, a new book? What can we look forward to reading from you in the future?
No books in the pipeline. I’ve been writing a daily blog for 2 years, and I plan to keep that up. It has proven to be a great exercise for being observant and extracting lessons from my life as an entrepreneur.
What is your favourite quote?
When I was about 12 years old I asked my dad how we would survive the hole in the ozone layer. He said to me, “Everything will be ok in the end. If it’s not ok, it’s not the end.” He was right.
